Rosen Applauds $2.59 Million in CDC Grant Funding Awarded to Nevada to Study Variant Strains of COVID-19

Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), released the following statement applauding news of a grant totaling $2,592,176 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded to Nevada to expand genomic sequencing.

"During this time of crisis, we must ensure our country has the knowledge and resources to continue the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic," said Senator Rosen. "We have made significant progress in containing the spread, but there is still more to learn about this virus. The original COVID-19 strain makes up about half of all cases in this country. The rest of America's coronavirus cases are made up of new, potentially more dangerous strains of the virus. I am pleased that Nevada will receive funding to help further our understanding of variant strains of COVID-19, and how best to fight them."

BACKGROUND: Nevada is receiving this funding under the American Rescue Plan (ARP), which Senator Rosen voted for and President Biden signed into law. The CDC is investing a total of $1.7 billion to expand genomic sequencing in response to COVID-19 variants.
